GOG is a popular gaming platform that built its business on bringing old games back to life on modern hardware. The company's latest initiative is another step forward in that mission.
Dreamlist is a new program GOG launched today. Essentially serving as an update to its Community Wishlist, Dreamlist lets users vote on which games they'd like GOG to update for modern hardware. It is also a part of GOG's Preservation Program, which aims to offer updates and continued support to games that have been abandoned by their developers.
GOG's Preservation Program brings modern updates to old games that have been wallowing in limbo for some time. These updates can include support for higher resolutions, modern controllers, and cloud saves, among other features. GOG, which was originally known as Good Old Games, started its business by offering gamers a way to buy and play classic PC games.
Dreamlist endeavors to present a streamlined method of allowing the classic gaming community to give its feedback on which titles it would like to see updated and preserved. This feedback not only lets GOG know where to place its efforts; it can also signal to rights holders that there is interest in particular titles, which can speed up the process of getting the game into GOG's marketplace and onto gamers' PCs.
Note that a game's popularity on Dreamlist will not ensure that GOG will (or even can) remake or update it. Maintaining classic PC games can be a messy business; in addition to software and technology concerns, the business side of who owns publication and distribution rights can be quite murky. Still, a community's voice can be large enough to signal the desire for a title and effect actual change.
