OnePlus teases next flagship launch event as rumours swirl about OnePlus 12 receiving world's first 3,000 nit smartphone display
Yesterday, OnePlus presented the Open, a large foldable that the company hopes will serve as an alternative to the Galaxy Z Fold5 and Pixel Fold. Incidentally, the OnePlus Open boasts the brightest displays of any modern smartphone at 2,800 nits, 200 nits brighter than the Oppo Find X6 Pro and 400 nits beyond the Pixel 8 Pro. However, there is already talk of this being a short-lived accolade because of another upcoming OnePlus flagship.
Earlier today, OnePlus confirmed on Weibo its intentions to host another product launch, this time on October 24. Crucially, this date also marks the start of Qualcomm's Snapdragon Summit 2023, where it is expected to unveil the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, its next high-end smartphone chipset. Thus, it seems that OnePlus will use its October 24 event to showcase its next-generation flagship, presumably called the OnePlus 12.
For now, OnePlus is not focusing on any performance benefits that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 may bring. Instead, it is building up its launch event by teasing forthcoming display technology. For example, the teaser image below ends with the statement that October 24 will be a 'moment of historical significance for Chinese screens', which it and Oppo have developed in partnership with BOE Technology.
According to Digital Chat Station, the latter has managed to create a 1440p (2K) panel that peaks at 3,000 nits, which would be a likely candidate for the OnePlus 12. Supposedly, the company has developed a 1220p (1.5K) panel that surpasses 3,000 nits too, although it remains to be seen in what capacity this will be available. Either way, it seems that OnePlus' next flagship could lead the way with the market's brightest display while also being one of the first smartphones to feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, along with the Xiaomi 14 and Xiaomi 14 Pro.
