Google has now begun shipping the Pixel 8 Pro, the more expensive half of the Pixel 8 series. While we have not got our hands on either of Google's latest flagships yet, DxOMark has put the larger Pro model through its usual set of camera tests. Surprisingly, Google has been outshone by Apple this time around, with the opposite being true with the Pixel 7 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Overall, the website awarded Google's latest premier smartphone a score of 153, tying it with the Find X6 Pro for 4th in its overall leaderboard. For reference, DxOMark considers there to be a smaller improvement in camera quality between the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 8 Pro than the Pixel 6 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro. Specifically, only 6 points separate the Pixel 8 Pro from its predecessor, less than half the gap between the Pixel 7 Pro and Pixel 6 Pro.
Unsurprisingly, the Pixel 8 Pro performs admirably in most scenarios. However, DxOMark observed occasional losses of fine details and textures, plus errors between foreground and background objects when shooting in portrait mode. Moreover, the Pixel 7 Pro successor suffers from sharpness differences between video frames and temporal noise in low-light video. In short, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max pip the Pixel 8 Pro to the post, with the Huawei P60 Pro remaining unchallenged by its US competitors.
