OnePlus takes the premium-smartphone crown in the Indian market for the 2nd quarter of 2019
Counterpoint Research has reported that OnePlus is now the #1 brand in the premium sector of the Indian smartphone market in 2Q2019, and not Samsung as usual. Then again, the latter is still #2 overall, despite losing 4 percentage-points year-on-year (YoY). It has also posted a 12% gain YoY to gain the same rank in this country's feature-phone market for the time studied.
Then again, Samsung's most popular device in this country for 2Q2019 was the decidedly non-flagship Galaxy A10. Overall, Xiaomi has retained the greatest share of the market for 2 consecutive 2nd quarters. However, its YoY performance was flat, which is worrying especially for an OEM with so many devices on sale in India. Realme, Nokia, Asus, and OnePlus posted the most rapid growth in this market for 2Q2019.
The news in this report for OPPO was somewhat mixed. It has hung on to a top-5 spot in terms of market share in the quarter; however, this share also declined by 3% YoY. Then again, the same also increased compared to the same in 1Q2019 to the tune of 53%. This was attributed to the success of devices such as the F11 and the more cost-effective A series.
Huawei was indeed shown to falter somewhat in the 2Q2019 Indian smartphone market, due to its US trade ban. Nevertheless, it was reported to remain in the top 10 brands in the country. Finally, total smartphone shipments in 2Q2019 were calculated at 37 million: a record amount for a single quarter in India.
