OnePlus Open 2: Leaker discusses mammoth battery capacity and release window for early Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 foldable
The OnePlus Open (curr. $1,399.99 on Amazon) is fast approaching a year old, having been unveiled in October 2023 globally. However, OnePlus is not expected to replace its first foldable anytime soon, even in the wake of the Honor Magic V3, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 and Xiaomi MIX Fold 4 to name but a few new rivals. Instead, the so-called OnePlus Open 2 is not anticipated to arrive until 2025, well after even the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold makes its debut.
Nonetheless, Digital Chat Station continues to share tidbits about the state of OnePlus' next foldable, which will likely arrive as the Oppo Find N5 in markets where Oppo has more brand recognition than OnePlus. For example, almost a month has passed since the leaker claimed that Oppo and OnePlus would utilise ultra-thin glass (UTG) for their Open and Find N3 successors. The same leaker added that the device would be 'extremely light', a threshold that continues to drop ever closer to 200 g for book-style foldable smartphones.
Surprisingly, Digital Chat Station believes that the OnePlus Open 2 will feature roughly a 6,000 mAh combined battery capacity, which would eclipse the 4,805 mAh combined capacity of its predecessor. Although this may seem somewhat fanciful, Honor managed to include a 5,150 mAh combined capacity within the 9.2 mm thick Magic V3 by using denser silicon-carbon (Si/C) battery technology. Currently, Digital Chat Station estimates that OnePlus and Oppo will announce their next-generation foldable smartphones in Q1 2025 with Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipsets.
