Galaxy Z Flip 6 actually has an improved desktop mode
Samsung recently announced the Galaxy Z Flip 6 as the latest iteration of its clamshell-style foldable smartphone. The new foldable brings some new features such as more RAM, a new primary camera, and a bigger battery capacity. However, some things have remained the same such as the design and the lack of Samsung DeX support. Surprisingly, there's a new desktop experience when you hook up the Galaxy Z Flip 6 to a monitor.
The Galaxy Z Flip 6, like the Galaxy Z Flip 5 has support for display output over USB-C. When connected to an external display users get a mirrored version of their phone's screen. However, according to Android Authority, users can get a desktop experience on the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
To get this desktop mode, users will have to enable ''force desktop mode'' in One UI 6.1.1's developer settings. When toggled on and connected to an external display, users get a desktop experience and not a mirror of the phone's primary display. It's not DeX-like but it is a better experience than just mirroring your display.
According to the report, apps can be launched in freeform with icons to minimize or maximize app windows. There's no taskbar neither does this desktop mode display system info such as battery level, network signal bar, and time. In addition, users won't be able to use window snapping, and will have to manually move and resize windows.
While Samsung DeX is unavailable on the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (available to preorder on Amazon for $1099), this is a better way to get the best out of the phone when hooked up to an external monitor seeing as Samsung has refused to add DeX Support to its clamshell foldable phones despite the hardware supporting it.
