Galaxy Z Flip6 gets tortured with scratches, dirt, and fire to show familiar weaknesses and new strengths
The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Z Flip6 are the newest foldables from Samsung and, as expected, the phones have been making rounds on YouTube. Zack Nelson of JerryRigEverything has also gotten his hands on the devices and the YouTuber has now put the cheaper Z Flip6 through his signature durability tests, including a teardown to show the impressive vapor chamber.
While Samsung has managed to improve the dust and water resistance rating to IP48, other durability improvements have been little to non-existent.
Galaxy Z Flip6 still falls short of traditional smartphones
Right off the bat, Zack shows that Samsung has been unable to improve the durability of the inside display of the Galaxy Z Flip6. Unfortunately, due to the soft plastic outer layer, the display still scratches at a measly level 2 with deeper grooves at a level 3. Even fingernails can leave permanent marks on the screen. So, like previous Galaxy Z Flip devices, you must still be careful while using the Z Flip6.
The outer display is another matter. Thanks to the presence of Gorilla Glass Victus 2, the cover resists scratches very well with marks only appearing at a level 6. The same is true for the camera and flash which are also covered with glass.
Moving on to the flame test, the inner display of the Galaxy Z Flip6 manages to survive the lighter flame but not without some exterior damage. Once again, the outer plastic layer is the Achilles heel of the flexible display as it bubbles up under extreme heat.
Fortunately, the Galaxy Z Flip 6’s IP48 rating isn’t just for show as the device and the hinge remain functional even after Zack tortures it with a handful of dirt and debris.
Finally, the enhanced Armor Aluminum frame of the Galaxy Z Flip6 makes the smartphone quite rigid as the reviewer is unable to bend the device the wrong way.
Galaxy Z Flip6 features an impressive vapor chamber
Samsung has outfitted the Galaxy Z Flip 6 with a vapor chamber. The vapor chamber appears quite large relative to the size of the device as shown by Zack. However, testing conducted by GSMArena suggest that the heat output of the device jumped up to a toasty 44℃ during the 3DMark Wild Life Stress test.
Long story short, the Galaxy Z Flip6 appears to be more of the same as, aside from IP48, there aren’t noticeable durability improvements over the Z Flip 5 (Available on Amazon). So while the Galaxy Z Flip6 isn’t overly fragile, folks who were hoping for a tougher foldable will be disappointed.
