HMD Skyline's iFixit teardown reveals the innovative, repairable Nokia Lumia design
With the HMD Skyline, HMD Global presented a high-quality mid-range smartphone last week that combines powerful features with a design in the style of the Nokia Lumia 920. As a result, the device should not only look stylish but also be easily repairable thanks to "Gen 2 Repairability".
HMD Global's marketing is not exaggerating, at least according to the teardown by iFixit, which gives the HMD Skyline a repair rating of 9 out of 10 possible points. The housing was designed from the ground up to make repairs easier. This starts with opening the back, which only requires a single screw on the underside to be loosened.
The screw activates a mechanism that pushes the corresponding corner of the back out of the casing so that users can easily insert a tool to loosen the adhesive. The device does not work completely without adhesive, as this protects the housing from water penetration, but the adhesive used can be removed relatively easily.
Nevertheless, the back can then simply be clicked back into the housing. Once inside, the display can be removed extremely easily by loosening the color-coded screws and disconnecting the display cable from the mainboard; the screen then falls out of the housing without resistance.
Instead of using adhesive, HMD Global relies on a foam seal for the display to enable IP54 certification. Although the battery is glued into the housing, it can be easily removed thanks to the plastic tab. The speakers, USB-C port, microSD and SIM card reader, and all four cameras can also be replaced individually and relatively easily. Original spare parts will soon be available in the iFixit online store.
