Fairphone 5 launches in a new color and more affordable configuration

Fairphone has announced that its latest smartphone, the Fairphone 5, which is a year old by the way, is now available to buy in a new color and configuration. The Fairphone 5 originally launched in Matte Black, Sky Blue, and a transparent version. It was also only available to buy in a single configuration - 8GB RAM + 256GB storage - that cost €629. Buyers who couldn't shell out that sum can now pick the phone up in a cheaper configuration that also comes in a new color.

Fairphone says the new colorway which is called Moss Green is called the Fairphone 5 Community Edition. It comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and carries a €549 price tag. For those who may not fancy the new color but still want the new 6+128GB configuration, Fairphone has also made it available in Matte Black. Both are available to order on the manufacturer's website.

The Fairphone 5 is a sustainable smartphone made from over 70% of fair trade or recycled materials. Fairphone has also made it easy to repair by adopting a modular design. Owners can order parts such as the battery, display, charging port, and cameras and replace it themselves without incurring additional costs from sending it to a repair shop.

This easy-to-repair design is necessary considering Fairphone plans to provide software support for the phone up until 2031. Although it is important to mention that Fairphone says the phone, which has been updated to Android 14 following its launch in August 2023, will get at least 4 more OS upgrades.

The Fairphone 5 has a 6.46-inch 90Hz (2700 x 1224) OLED display with a centered punch hole and Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It is powered by a 6nm Qualcomm QCM 6490 chipset which allows for long term support. The phone has a 50MP Samsung JN1 front-facing camera, a 50MP Soy IMX800 primary rear camera, and a 50MP Sony IMX858 camera, all of which are user replaceable. It also has a ToF sensor.

There's a fingerprint scanner under the power button. It also has a microSD card slot (up to 2TB), NFC, Wi-Fi 6E, and dual SIM (nano+eSIM) support. It packs a 4,200mAh battery that supports 30W fast charging, although it doesn't ship with a charger and USB cable.
