Cheaper and better: now that's a positive development! Thanks to a retailer leak, we now know almost all the specs of this year's particularly exciting, modular, and sustainable mid-range smartphone, which will reportedly offer flagship features in some regards despite its lower RRP.

The successor to the Fairphone 5 was the subject of a leak at the beginning of June, in which the first official render image and a few technical specs, such as RAM, storage and color options, were revealed. The planned launch price of just under €550 was also revealed at the time, indicating a price decrease compared to its predecessor, which launched in 2023 for a rather hefty €699. This was likely a deal-breaker for many potential buyers, given the comparatively subpar specs.

Dynamic LTPO P-OLED

The Fairphone 6 will be much more exciting, as Winfuture editor Roland Quandt just reported on the basis of a retailer leak. Accordingly, the smartphone, which is manufactured under fair conditions and boasts high levels of modularity and repairability, will not only receive a significantly more modern design but also comprehensive hardware upgrades in virtually every area. Fans of compact smartphones will appreciate the display, which has shrunk to 6.31 inches, also features significantly reduced bezels and delivers dynamic refresh rates between 1 and 120 Hz thanks to modern LTPO P-OLED.

Regular Snapdragon chip

At 2,484 x 1,116 pixels and 432 ppi, the pixel density is slightly lower, but the screen will be protected by the more modern Gorilla Glass 7i. Instead of an unusual IoT SoC from 2021, the Fairphone 6 features a regular Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 from the end of 2023, which not only offers a more modern 5G modem, Bluetooth 5.4 and Wi-Fi 6E, but will also perform significantly faster as an octa-core with up to 2.5 Ghz. The RAM will amount to 8 GB, which is standard in the mid-range, and the 256 GB storage can be easily expanded thanks to the MicroSDXC slot. The battery capacity will increase slightly from 4,200 mAh to 4,415 mAh and will be recharged via USB-PD with a maximum of 33 watts.

Camera upgrade and downgrade

The dual camera and the front cameras have also been modernized. The 50-MP main camera now offers a significantly larger F/1.56 aperture, but the 120 degree FOV ultra-wide angle has been reduced from 50 MP to 13 MP, while the selfie cam has been reduced from 50 MP to 32 MP with an F/2.0 aperture. Tests will reveal whether this is ultimately an upgrade or downgrade. The Fairphone 6, which is planned in the colors Horizon Black, Cloud White and Forrest Green, is expected to be available from 25 June 2025. Various accessories are also planned, according to the leaker.
