Long software support, easy repairs and comparatively fair, sustainable production are some of the highlights of the Fairphone 5. However, with a launch price of €699 and rather mediocre specifications, the smartphone didn't offer a particularly good price-to-performance ratio otherwise. The Fairphone 6 aims to improve on this, launching at €549 with more modern components.
According to previous leaks, the phone should be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. The display shrinks to 6.31 inches but is expected to feature a more modern 120Hz LTPO OLED panel. Fairphone is reportedly also opting for an easily replaceable 4,415mAh battery, a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide camera and a 32MP selfie camera. Leaker @MysteryLupin has now published a promo video that shows the Fairphone 6 in action for the very first time.
The clip shows that the display and battery can be replaced relatively easily, but it also demonstrates the function of the new green slider on the right side of the phone. When this slider is pushed down, the Fairphone 6 activates a so-called “Essentials" mode. In this mode, the smartphone switches to a black-and-white user interface that is largely text-based. Its functionality is limited to basic features such as phone calls, text messages, the camera, music player and notes.
The Fairphone 6 will be officially unveiled on Wednesday, June 25, as indicated by a timer on the manufacturer's website. Therefore, all remaining features, specs and details regarding this new "Essential" mode should be confirmed.
