Nokia had been thought to be out of the smartphone market as its association with HMD now seems to mostly concern feature phones with its branding (such as the 3310 revival) - but perhaps not anymore.
The company's Community Manager has taken to its subreddit to make an announcement indicating that it is looking for a manufacturing partner for new mobile devices.
Nokia would apparently prefer a "large-scale" factory for this purpose, suggesting that it might want its new handsets to be affordable, have decent availability worldwide, or both.
The last crop of Nokia smartphones targeted longevity and sustainability as selling points, although maintaining up-to-date software was typically not their strong suit: for example, this G60 as listed on Amazon is still on Android 14.
The company had some critical hits with some units such as the XR21, although most of its handsets were mediocre at best. Hopefully, its new foray into the market can do better this time.
