Nokia asserts that its latest gateway devices can bring Wi-Fi 7 to the masses. They are rated to deliver speeds of up to 9.4 gigabits per second (Gb/s) in the Beacon 9, which also comes with an up-to-date streamlined design. Its Beacon 4 sibling is touted to launch at an entry-level cost with the same dual LAN ports.

Your next personal or home office broadband upgrade at an acceptable price might introduce new Beacon-series hardware to your home, according to Nokia

The Beacon 9 might blend in well with your interiors, with its updated tall yet compact form-factor, as opposed to the thicker tower shape of the Netgear Orbi 770 as found on Amazon

The Beacon 4 is shorter and more angular, yet is still rated for "unstoppable" Wi-Fi 7 connectivity (of up to 3.6Gb/s per second) with 2x2 MIMO on all bands.

It is dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz), as opposed to tri-band (with the addition of 6GHz) in the Beacon 9. The latter also supports 320MHz channel bandwidth while the former does not.

Both new gateways have a WAN port rated for 2.5 Gigabit (Gb) ethernet and 2 LAN ports with 1Gb speeds at best, though.

They can both form mesh networks in the presence of multiple units, all of which can be controlled via the same Nokia app.

The Beacon 9 and 4 are available to internet service providers as new customer premises equipment (CPE) from now.

As XGS-PON and 25G PON services grow, Wi-Fi upgrades are essential to delivering multi-gigabit speeds into homes.   Nokia’s new Beacon 4 and 9 are designed specifically for this purpose, allowing service providers to offer an affordable, best-in-class Wi-Fi 7 experience for the masses. Incorporating Wi-Fi 7’s full capabilities, the dual-band Beacon 4 gateway delivers 3.6Gbs speeds over Wi-Fi while the tri-band Beacon 9 gateway delivers blazingly fast 9.4Gbs speeds that help eliminate slowdowns and buffering issues. Both Beacons are powered by its Corteca software which allows operators to create and monetize better broadband experiences.

“As the connected home ecosystem grows increasingly complex, Wi-Fi 7 emerges not just as a technological upgrade, but as a strategic necessity. To unlock the full market potential of Wi-Fi 7, it is essential to accelerate its availability across a wider range of devices. Expanding access – while preserving opportunities for service providers to differentiate and monetize premium offerings – will be key to driving adoption at scale and delivering the elevated experience consumers expect.” said Alzbeta Fellenbaum, Practice Leader, Service Provider - Consumer at Omdia.
