Notebookcheck's Top 10 Laptops under 300 Euros

Florian Wimmer (translated by Andreas Osthoff), 07/31/2017

July 2018 update. Here you will find the best notebooks under 300 USD/Euros as reviewed by Notebookcheck. Our Top 10 list is regularly updated, maintained and commented on by our editors. This page is intended to help our readers decide which product to purchase.

For a long time only netbooks were really cheap, but now "conventional" notebooks are also available for under 300 USD/Euros. This has been made possible by more powerful and cheaper entry-level processors from Intel and AMD, and Microsoft Windows 8.1 with Bing. The latter is a fully-fledged Windows operating system. However, Microsoft Bing is the pre-configured default search engine in the browser (Internet Explorer), which can be modified in the browser settings. Windows 10 is often pre-installed on cheap devices, too.

Because of the low price, cost has to be cut on all sides. Since the display is an important cost factor, it is affected in most cases. You should not expect excellent contrast or colors in this category. Battery size, and as a result battery life, used materials, available interfaces, and communication modules offer many possibilities for savings too. If you are looking for a simple typewriter and have low requirements in general, you might find an appropriate device anyway. For affordable devices please also consider the following rankings:

The following table is an overview of the best Windows-based notebooks (>10-inch, no Chromebooks), under 300 USD/Euros (including OS) reviewed by Notebookcheck in the past 10 months. If ratings are equal, the latest review is listed first. The table can be sorted by clicking its headers and filtered by entering text in the text field above it (e.g. "matte").

Note: The cheapest street price at the time of the last revision of this article applies to the following list. The sales prices shown in the following table and in the price comparison with the individual articles are automatically updated daily and can therefore differ!

1st – Chuwi LapBook

Chuwi LapBook
Chuwi LapBook

The Chuwi LapBook is a very good offer for less than 300 Euros with Windows 10, high-res screen and metal case. other notebooks with these features are much more expensive. However, the performance quickly reveals the price category, and another problem of the import device is the warranty. It got our Best value Award, because you really get a lot for the money. However, there are customers report shorter battery runtimes after a short while on the Internet and we already mentioned long charging times during our review. It is a little adventure then, but the Chuwi LapBook definitely offers features you won't find on any other device in this price range.

2nd – Asus VivoBook E200HA

Asus VivoBook E200HA
Asus VivoBook E200HA

The Asus VivoBook E200HA might be too slow for intensive computational tasks, but those who want a simple companion for web surfing and writing might find what they are looking for. With silent operation and a Wi-Fi battery life of almost 9 hours you are well equipped for everyday tasks. Low weight is another pro.

Potential buyers might be disappointed by the slightly low storage capacity of only 32 GB. The slightly unstable lid is another annoying trifle. However, you can turn a blind eye in view of the price. The Asus VivoBook E200HA delivers a very good price performance ratio.

3rd - Asus VivoBook E12

Asus VivoBook E12
Asus VivoBook E12

A solid notebook for typing, web browsing and video playback is pretty much everything you can expect in the segment up to 300 Euros. This is just what you get with the VivoBook E12, an 11.6-inch notebook without any real highlights, but a good keyboard, silent operation, low temperatures, and low weight. Windows 10 is included as well. You must make compromises in terms of memory and the display is rather dark with limited viewing angles. A good offer for 250 Euros, but there are cheaper offers.

4th – Teclast Tbook 16 Power

Teclast Tbook 16 Power
Teclast Tbook 16 Power

The Teclast Tbook 16 Power stems from Middle Kingdom and actually "only" is a tablet with keyboard dock. What is interesting is that Windows 10 as well as Android 6 are installed. Hence, you can use apps for both environments. The silent convertible is powered by an Intel Atom x7, which is faster than the Atom x5, but cannot prevail against Pentium processors.

You have to accommodate to several problems in the realm of power consumption: Since the device comes from China, it makes sense that no power adapter is included since you can only use an adapter that supports the local network voltage. However, it is unreasonable that the device refused to work with several power adapters we have tried. In addition, the power supply of the USB ports is not sufficient for driving some peripherals. The power consumption is quite high in general, too.

Those who want to take an adventure will get a decent display. Moreover, the connectivity is decent with an additional Display port.

5th – Odys Vario Pro 12

Odys Vario Pro 12
Odys Vario Pro 12

Under 300 Euros (~$326) with active input pen: At a first glance, the Odys Vario Pro 12 appears to be an interesting alternative to convertibles from established manufacturers. In fact, only the display is slightly dark and the Wi-Fi reception could be better. Otherwise, the convertible delights with good battery runtimes, silent system noise, sufficient performance for everyday tasks, and an acceptable IPS display. Certainly, the highlight is the active input pen, which works reliably. Because of a low storage capacity of 32 GB, you will have to move files you do not need all the time to a microSD card.

6th – Medion Akoya E2215T

Medion Akoya E2215T
Medion Akoya E2215T

The Medion Akoya E2215T is a 11.6-inch convertible with Full HD display and quite a good battery life of about 8 hours in the Wi-Fi test. However, the storage capacity is quite low with 64 GB, but it can be expanded with a microSD card. You'll get two years warranty and quite a decent keyboard. In our opinion, it is annoying that the power cable is that short. Hence, you might often need an extension cable. In addition, the case is not absolutely stable. However, the Medion Akoya E2215T is a fair offer in view of its price of under 300 Euros.

7th – Acer Switch One 10

Acer Switch One 10
Acer Switch One 10

With bright and contrast-rich display, the Acer Switch One 10 is attractive. We reviewed the 64 GB model and would highly recommend this storage capacity for a Windows system. Otherwise you will have too less space for files. Good battery runtimes and a decent keyboard also make the device recommendable. However, we would have liked to see USB Type-C and USB 3.0 ports. In addition, the keyboard dock is not exactly stable and Acer only includes a 1-year warranty. Since price performance ratio and performance are alright, the device is absolutely recommendable.

8th – Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 310

Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 310
Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 310

The successor of the still available Miix 300, the Lenovo IdeaPad Miix 310 uses Intel's latest Atom platform called "Cherry Trail". Otherwise not much has changed: It is still a small 10.1-inch convertible: quiet, silent, powerful enough for everyday tasks. Compared to the predecessor, the convertible works notably faster. The dark, heavily reflective display is hardly suitable for outdoor use and you have to get used to the keyboard layout first. In return, you'll get a powerful battery, which easily last a day long.

9th - Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11IAP

Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11IAP
Lenovo Ideapad 120s-11IAP

Lenovo cannot really do much about the design of an inexpensive device like the Ideapad 120s-11IAP, right? It turns out they can by choosing a simple yet elegant design, which creates a much more noble impression than you expect from this segment. The stability is decent as well, and we like other systems to do the same. Still, there are drawbacks at this price point like the memory equipment at just 2 GB RAM. The system performance is mediocre and the storage limited. The IdeaPad 120s-11IAP can still be a good choice for a small budget and low expectations.

10th - Lenovo Ideapad 120S-14IAP

Lenovo Ideapad 120S-14IAP
Lenovo Ideapad 120S-14IAP

The Lenovo Ideapad 120S-14IAP is the bigger sibling of the Ideapad 120S-11IAP and is similar in many respects, including a nice chassis. Display and storage capacity require limitations from the user, but you get fast USB ports and decent battery runtimes in return. The keyboard convinces as well, even though we would have liked to see a background illumination. You should note that it is not possible to replace or upgrade components, so you should make sure you get the right configuration for your requirements.
