Rumours about Valve releasing a next-generation Steam Deck have been rumbling on for a while now. While the company has not officially outlined anything yet, there have been clues that a first-party gaming device running SteamOS is in development, codenamed 'Fremont'.
Additionally, there have been suggestions that Lenovo may be the first third-party to release a gaming handheld running SteamOS. Based on new information supplied by The Verge, this rumoured device may be less than a month from becoming official. Specifically, the website quotes the following text from an invite to a 'Lenovo Legion x AMD: The Future of Gaming Handhelds' event on January 7:
Join us for a cocktail reception hosted by Lenovo Legion and AMD gaming leaders, with special guests Valve and other gaming industry giants. We'll be sharing our thoughts on what lies ahead in the gaming handheld space and showcasing our latest Lenovo Legion Go innovations advanced by AMD. Come to hear how Lenovo Legion and AMD Ryzen are making gaming more immersive for all and stay to experience the future of handheld gaming firsthand!
For context, the date of this event is also the start of CES 2025 in Las Vegas. Moreover, The Verge adds that one of Valve's special guests will be Pierre-Loup Griffais, a public figurehead for Valve's Steam Deck and SteamOS projects.
Unequivocably, Lenovo will be unveiling a new Legion Go powered by an AMD APU in the presence of Valve. Based on recent leaks, the device in question will be a variant of the Legion Go S, which will serve as a cheaper alternative to the existing Legion Go (curr. $499 on Amazon) rather than a successor to it. Unfortunately, it remains to be seen whether the true second-generation Legion Go will also be in attendance with its rumoured OLED display.
