Microsoft releasing smaller Surface Laptop with Qualcomm Snapdragon X2
Microsoft has already two versions of the Surface Laptop 13-inch this year. Ignoring the Surface Laptop 8 we reviewed earlier this year with a 13.8-inch display, the Surface Laptop 13-inch received Intel's Panther Lake architecture in May as part of Microsoft's 'for Business' refresh.
Also, Microsoft updated the original Surface Laptop 13-inch with an 8 GB RAM SKU in June (curr. $849 on Amazon). Billed as a cheaper option in the company's Microsoft line, this new SKU contains the same underlying hardware as the device we considered superfluous and too expensive when reviewing it last year.
According to Roland Quandt, Microsoft has prepared a new Surface Laptop 13-inch for consumers as well. Writing on WinFuture, the leaker reports that the new Surface Laptop 13-inch leverages Qualcomm's Snapdragon X2 platform, just like the Surface Pro 12 and Surface Laptop 8 before it.
Moreover, Quandt states that the 13-inch laptop will be available with 16 GB of RAM and 256 GB or 512 GB of storage. Reportedly, these SKUs will reach the Eurozone for €1,319 (~$1,505) and €1,439 (~$1,640) including taxes. Pricing typically varies by a few Euros between member states, though. Unfortunately, Quandt has not shared any other details yet.
Nonetheless, we can infer a few changes based on Microsoft's recent Surface Laptop releases. For instance, the Surface Laptop 13-inch 'for Business' contains up to 24 GB of RAM and a 25% brighter IPS display than Microsoft's original model. Presumably, this 500-nit display will be joined by a weaker Snapdragon X2 chipset than the Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P-64-100 offered in the Surface Laptop 8.
Currently, that only leaves the Snapdragon X2 Plus X2P-42-100, Qualcomm's direct successor to the chipset found in the original Surface Laptop 13-inch. Quandt has not revealed when this new 13-inch Surface will be available to purchase, though.
