A typically reliable leaker has outlined purported specifications of the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony's mid-cycle refresh. Reportedly, the PS5 Pro will maintain its predecessor's CPU, albeit with a 500 MHz overclock. However, an upgrade to an RDNA 3-derived GPU with more shaders should ensure significant performance improvements.

RedGamingTech (RGT) has revealed the alleged specifications of a PlayStation 5 Pro (PS5 Pro) prototype. To recap, Sony has only just released new versions of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) and PS5 Digital Edition, which appear to resemble more of PS5 Slim than Sony's marketing suggests. Additionally, Microsoft is also planning mid-generation refreshes of the Xbox Series S and Series X with design and hardware tweaks.

According to RGT, Sony is designing the PS5 Pro around 8 CPU cores based on AMD's Zen 2 architecture. While prototypes are subject to change, this CPU core arrangement would be unchanged from the current PS5, as would its architecture underpinning it. However, the leaker claims that Sony has increased CPU clock speeds by 500 MHz, a 14.2% bump from 3.5 GHz to approximately 4.0 GHz.

Conversely, the PS5 Pro is rumoured to rely upon an RDNA 3-derived GPU. Not only would this be an architecture change from the RDNA 2 equivalent in the PS5, but it should also represent a Compute Unit (CU) increase from 36 to 60. Moreover, GPU clock speeds are said to be between 2.5 GHz and 2.8 GHz, although final speeds have not yet been determined. Either way, this would represent a minimum 270 MHz and 12% overclock. Furthermore, the PS5 Pro is rumoured to pair its upgraded GPU with 16 GB of GDDR6 system memory and 2 GB-4 GB of DDR5 RAM reserved for the OS itself.
