Impact Display Solutions IMP-3713-V2-16-500 Fanless PC Review
Impact Components specializes in building industrial PCs with specialized hardware and motherboards. Certain models have active cooling while the review unit here is fanless. Let's stress and benchmark the system to see how a passively cooled chassis can handle a low-power 12 to 25 W AMD Ryzen Embedded V1605B CPU.
More detailed specifications on the PC and its D3713-V/R mITX motherboard can be found via their respective product pages.
Case
The entire case is anodized aluminum from top to bottom and IP50 certified for dust protection but not water protection. It is significantly larger and heavier than the IMP-3654-B1-R we checked out early last year which should hopefully lead to improved cooling and higher thermal soak.
Connectivity
The two antenna attach to the front of the device instead of the rear. Annoyingly, there are no HDMI or USB-C ports.
Communication
Maintenance
The bottom panel is easily removable with just a Philips screwdriver to reveal the underside of the motherboard. Accessing the rest of the motherboard, however, requires additional disassembly.
Accessories and Warranty
The box includes two antenna in addition to an AC adapter. The standard one-year limited manufacturer warranty applies.
Performance
Processor
Raw CPU performance is about 14 percent and 22 percent slower than the Ryzen 3 4300U in multi-thread and single-thread workloads, respectively, to represent an entry-level processor.

Storage Devices
The 500 GB Wycom SSD w/ Silicon Motion SM2262EN controller offers faster transfer rates than SATA III, but it's still well below most other NVMe SSDs. Sequential read and write rates top out in the 800 to 900 MB/s range while most NVMe drives are at least two times faster.
Up to two M.2 SSDs are supported on the motherboard, but only one of the two slots is full PCIe x4 as the other is PCIe x2.

GPU Performance
The integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 performs where we expect it to be when compared to laptops with Ryzen 2000U or 3000U series CPUs. Though it's a huge upgrade from the ancient Intel UHD 620 graphics, most current Core i7 Iris Xe solutions will outperform our fanless PC by 30 to 50 percent.

Temperature
Surface temperatures top out at 46 C after running extreme loads for over an hour.
Stress Test
When running Prime95 to stress the CPU, clock rates would boost to 2.9 GHz for just a few seconds before dipping slightly and stabilizing at 2.8 GHz. After 20 minutes or so, however, core temperature eventually reaches 100 C which forces clock rates to drop much steeper to the 1.8 GHz to 2.4 GHz range as shown by the screenshots below.
Running Witcher 3 is more representative of real-world loads. In this scenario, core temperature remains stable at 75 C.

Power Consumption
Performance-per-watt is slightly lower than mini PCs running on the latest 11th gen Intel platform. Idling on desktop, for example, consumes between 11 W and 13 W compared to just half that on the Intel NUC11PAQi7. Higher loads like games consume about 36 W to 39 W compared to 31 W to 39 W on the aforementioned NUC even though GPU performance on our AMD PC is noticeably slower.

Pros
Cons
Verdict
Prime95 shows that the passive cooling of the chassis is not enough to fully support CPU Turbo clock rates for extended periods. Clock rates can start as high as 2.9 GHz before inevitably falling to as low as 1.8 GHz when core temperature inevitably hits 100 C. It appears that even a massive aluminum heat sink isn't able to run the ULV CPU at maximum performance indefinitely. Lenovo offers its own Intel-based fanless mini PC that's much smaller than our AMD unit albeit with fewer expandable features.
