Reviews for the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 2024
An anti-reflective display with a 2000-nit brightness, a 144-Hz refresh rate and a docking keyboard included for free: These features make the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 very unpopular with the competition. Buyers, on the other hand, can get excited because the 12.2-inch tablet is comparatively inexpensive despite its extensive features. However, there are a few disadvantages—keywords being Google Play Store.

There’s a specific cohort for whom I think the Huawei MatePad Pro (2024) is still worth considering. If you aren’t tangled up in the Google ecosystem (or, at least, aren’t fussed about your tablet getting hooked into the hivemind) and are looking for a large-screened Android tablet with a useful stylus for artistic pursuits, the MatePad Pro (2024) is a solid bet. Colour accuracy is terrific, the stylus is effective and, if you get the PaperMatte version, the drawing and writing feedback is immensely satisfying. Beyond that, the appeal as a laptop replacement mainly hinges on its affordability. If you can stomach the software gripes, getting the tablet, keyboard and (if you’re quick) stylus altogether for as little as £699 is a steal.

Tablets with ‘pro’ in the name need to be careful, because the M4 version of the iPad Pro has that particular market well and truly cornered. Step things down a bit in your power expectations, and the Huawei MatePad Pro is a pretty good performer, its Papermatte OLED screen offering a bright and colourful experience that’s largely free from reflections (though attractive to fingermarks) and with keyboard and stylus accessories that turn it into a kind of Android-powered laptop.

The Huawei MatePad Pro PaperMatte edition is a tablet aimed at creatives, with an emphasis on illustration, thanks in no small part to the Tandem OLED PaperMatte display. The display is indeed impressive: it’s vibrant while at the same time being easy on the eye. Video, photos, drawing and text are all equally displayed vividly and clearly. There’s a slight graininess and soft-focus effect to the picture, but I didn’t find either detracted from the experience. The gold finish on the PaperMatte Edition is subtle with a scratchy pattern that might not be to everyone’s taste. However, I found it suited the overall design well.

The Huawei MatePad Pro should be a five-star device that all creative businesses should consider, but the lack of Google and Android is a problem. Huawei has a superb track record with hardware but the software lets it down. In the MatePad Pro, we have innovative hardware riddled with duff apps and overly complicated ways of getting the ones you actually need and that is too frustrating a process. This is the kind of hardware you'll want to use at work but there is still no decent substitute for Android and iOS. As such, this is a wonderful tablet that we struggle to recommend.

While the price tag is a bit high at RM4599, it does come with a whole bunch of freebies like the Huawei Glide Keyboard, which would normally be RM899 and the M Pencil (3rd Gen), normally sold separately for RM699. There's also a free Huawei mouse and Huawei Sound Joy speaker. But we expect these freebies to be limited both in stock and only available for a certain period, so if you're interested, it's best not to wait too long. Other premium tablet contenders in this price range include the Samsung Galaxy Tab S10+ for the same price range and similar features, but Huawei's MatePad tablets tend to offer longer battery life. The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 is also ideal if you're already heavily invested in a Huawei ecosystem (Huawei phone, Huawei Smart TV, etc.). But it should work fine with other devices as well.

If you're a digital artist or content creator, then I think the Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 PaperMatte edition is one of the best tools on the market. Its PaperMatte display, paired with the M-Pencil and GoPaint app, makes for a great creative experience. The battery life and fast charging are also top-notch, and the design is both lightweight and premium. However, for casual users or those heavily reliant on Google apps, the MatePad Pro 12.2 might not be the best fit. The lack of Google services and the slightly underwhelming performance compared to premium competitors are notable drawbacks. If you’re not tied to the Google ecosystem and can work with HarmonyOS, this is a stellar device. Otherwise, you might want to consider alternatives like the iPad Pro or Galaxy Tab S9+.

Huawei has announced the global debut of its latest tablet, the MatePad Pro 12.2, which will be coming to the Malaysian market next week. It’s basically meant to be the brand’s competitor to Apple’s iPad Pro, especially in terms of the display, in a bigger package. As you can tell from the name, the MatePad Pro 12.2 sports a large 12.2-inch OLED display with a 144Hz display, tandem OLED technology, and a PaperMatte texture. The brand claims that the screen can get up to 2,000 nits for brightness, which is certainly a lot brighter than the iPad Pro’s 1,600-nit figure.

If you can work around the difficulties of not having the Google Play Store on your device, and don’t mind installing apps via APK files, then I think the MatePad Pro 12.2in, particularly the Papermatte edition, is a highly attractive proposition. The display is stunning, especially with that matte finish glass, and the keyboard case is a clever piece of design. It feels great to use – at least from my initial time with it – and it’s superbly compact and lightweight. The key will be the price and the availability. If Huawei’s UK pricing undercuts rivals such as Samsung and Apple, it might be worth a punt. If it’s a similar price, that puts the MatePad Pro in a tricky situation. The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2in was launched alongside a trio of wearables – the Huawei Watch 5 GT, the Watch 5 GT Pro and the Watch D2 – in Barcelona. We hope to have reviews of those up on the site in due course, so watch this space.

Unboxing Huawei's MatePad Pro PaperMatte Edition, a 12-inch tablet boasting a reflection-killing screen, ideal for travellers. You can clearly see your games, movies etc on the MatePad Pro PaperMatte's multi-layer display even in direct sunlight, making it one of the best options for outdoors. That panel is absolutely the highlight here, although I also love this tablet's skinny and surprisingly light design. Vs an iPad, it's quite slender and easy to hold for hours.

The Huawei MatePad Pro 12.2 is the best Android tablet for drawing and illustration. It has a massive bright dual-layer OLED panel, an almost zero-latency stylus, great accessories, a massive battery and the excellent GoPaint app. But unfortunately, the lack of support for Google services means it’s not worth Considering for casual users.

Qualcomm Maleoon 910: Graphics chip for smartphones and tablets, integrated in the HiSilicon Kirin 9000W. Unfortunately, Huawei has not provided any detailed information. What is certain is that it does not support hardware-based ray tracing and only the older Vulkan 1.0 standard.
Non demanding games should be playable with these graphics cards.
» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Graphics Cards and the corresponding Benchmark List.
Kirin 9000W: ARM-based 12-core SoC. Huawei does not reveal any information about the SoC. The little information that is available comes from benchmarks and system analysis tools. The CPU consists of three clusters with a total of 12 cores. The power-saving cluster has four ARM Cortex-A510 cores, each operating at up to 1,530 MHz, while six other cores use unspecified cores from HiSilicon (0x0D42) and clock at up to 2,150 MHz. The third cluster contains two HiSilicon cores (0x0D02), each operating at a maximum of 2,487 MHz.» Further information can be found in our Comparison of Mobile Processsors.

This range of display format is largely the upper limit for tablets and the lower limit for subnotebooks.
The advantage of subnotebooks is that the entire laptop can be small in size and therefore easily portable. The tiny display has the added advantage of requiring little power, which further improves battery life and thus mobility. The disadvantage is that reading texts is exhausting for the eyes. High resolutions, which one is used to from a standard laptop, are almost not usable.
The same applies to tablets in this size range.

In 2014, Huawei established the Honor subsidiary brand under which certain smartphone lines are sold. The Huawei name is usually not listed for these products.
