Reviews for the Huawei MatePad 11.5 (2025)
The MatePad 11.5 (2025) in the PaperMatte edition is an exciting tablet for everyday university life and creative users, thanks to its matte screen and stylus support, as well as a large battery. However, the paper-like display has several advantages, as noted in our review.

If not for the elephant in the room, Huawei would have a sure-fire winner on its hands with the new MatePad 11.5.5. It’s sleek, portable, and the 11.5-inch matte-finish screen is an absolute treat, seriously reducing reflections and providing more of a traditional pen-and-paper experience when paired with a stylus. The performance is solid for a tablet of its price, and the battery life is much better than last year’s model. The problem is that big ol’ elephant, and there’s no getting around it. Huawei’s lack of Google Play Services essentially means you need to turn into a one-person IT department just to get it to reach a similar baseline to what other Android tablets offer out of the box – and even then, there are still limitations on what you can do and the apps you can install. Huawei’s first-party alternative apps are well polished and do a decent job of closing the gap, but if you rely on Google services like Docs for work or school, it’s effectively dead on arrival.

The HUAWEI MatePad 11.5 PaperMatte Edition (2025) is a solid option for those who want a work-focused tablet. It's a feature-rich device that even lets you paint with GoPaint, an app which has dozens of brushes. If you want a versatile, ultra-portable tablet with a PC-like experience, you can't go wrong with this one.

There’s very little to dislike about the Huawei MatePad 11.5in (2025), however. It’s slim, lightweight and sturdy, has a solid PaperMatte display and punchy quad-speakers, comes with a brilliant stylus as a free gift (at the time of writing) and is available with one of the best native sketching apps on the market. If you desperately need access to Google apps or plan to use your tablet for working, there are better options out there. The 2025 iPad remains our top choice due to the App Store’s superior selection of serious, professional-level software, and the Xiaomi Pad 7 offers unbeatable value for the complete bundle. For those seeking a small tablet that can be used for simply watching content and/or doodling on the go, however, the Huawei MatePad 11.5 (2025) is a fantastic alternative.

The MatePad 11.5’s craftsmanship, display, and battery stamina make it an impressive piece of hardware. Its tactile screen finish and accompanying stylus is nearly enough to make this a daily-use device. Yet for all its physical strengths, the software remains an immovable roadblock. The absence of Google integration, coupled with inconsistent app availability, forces users into a patchwork of sideloading and third-party fixes that few outside the enthusiast crowd will tolerate. HarmonyOS itself runs smoothly, and Huawei’s own tools have flashes of brilliance, but they can’t fully mask the ecosystem’s blind spots. That leaves the MatePad in an awkward middle ground. It’s a superbly engineered tablet that will be a good choice for those willing to work around its limitations, but for the average buyer in Western markets, the compromises are hard to ignore.
