Honor has been a well-established smartphone manufacturer in Europe for some time now. The Huawei brand also carries a notebook as of late, although it is only available in Asia for the time being. We have procured not one but two variants of the Honor Magicbook and put Intel up against AMD.

HONOR improved the aesthetics, but halved the storage and number of speakers when moving from the HONOR MagicBook to the HONOR MagicBook 14. The screen is dimmer and the battery is smaller here than it was on the HONOR MagicBook too. They also increased the price by a rather significant RM200 to RM2499, which makes it much less than the original HONOR MagicBook. I do find it an absolutely unnecessary refresh especially as they kept the same chipset from the HONOR MagicBook, when the AMD Ryzen 4000 series processors are already widely available.

Just from looking at it, the new MagicBook 14 doesn't feel all that new compared to the previous iteration, The design is exactly the same as before, and that has benefits and disadvantages. It feels sturdy and premium, just as it did before, and the design feels classic, yet it has a bit of flair thanks to the blue chamfered edges, which give it a but more personality. On the other hand, keeping the webcam under the keyboard is a terrible decision, and it's just not a good way to use a camera. You're very limited in how you can position yourself in the frame, and it's especially problematic when so many people are working from home.

A decent if unambitious update, the introduction of a Core i7 processor and integrated graphics could be seen as a bit of a step sideways from the Ryzen 5 system it replaces, especially as the price has increased at the same time. So while the new MagicBook is a powerful, stylish and well-made laptop with improved battery life, the high price, Type-A 2.0 port, half-baked Type-C connector and daft webcam positioning all count against it, preventing a full recommendation.

The Honor MagicBook 15 is a very good budget large-screen Windows laptop. It looks great, handles basic PC tasks with aplomb and is superior to the very similar-looking Huawei MateBook D 15 (2020). The Huawei offers faster disk speeds and a marginally better graphical performance but the Honor’s display boasts better colour space coverage and greater colour accuracy, meaning it’s better suited for creative work. Battery life and CPU performance are slightly higher on the Honor as well. The Honor MagicBook 15 is edged out slightly by the Acer Swift 3 in terms of overall performance and portability, but if you value screen acreage over speed then the Honor MagicBook 15 is a very good-value option. If you’re looking for a large-screened 15in laptop for not very much money, they don’t get much better than this.

Overall, the Honor MagicBook 14 2021 AMD model doesn't change much. However, it inherits features from its predecessors, such as the 100% sRGB colour gamut, narrow bezels, and ultracompact all-metal body. It also comes with a highly efficient AMD Ryzen 5000 series processor and strong battery life but it should mainly be used for office work and light photo or video editing but it could also be used for movie watching as well. The Honor MagicBook 14 2021 AMD model is quite competitive, even among other laptops at the same price. At less than RM3000, it's an affordable choice for students and office workers in their first job. The Honor MagicBook 14 2021 AMD model is available in Malaysia for RM2699 if you get the base model (8GB RAM+256GB SSD). You could also get one with more storage (8GB RAM+512GB) for RM2999. The camera has been much-improved, and it’s great for meetings, while the fingerprint scanner works great. The sound is good enough, while this is a powerful laptop, with powerful internals. On top of everything, even the keyboard is quite good, and so on. The HONOR MagicBook View 14 is an excellent Windows 11 laptop, which steers clear of major flaws. HONOR basically fixed all of the complaints I had for the MagicBook 14. I highly recommend it.

The screen is a pleasure to work with, it is fast enough for most tasks, even graphics intensive one, the touchpad is huge, the webcam is one of the best around and so is the audio subsystem. It's hard to sing the praises of a device - whether that's a phone, a laptop or a tablet - with poor battery life. And there is a lot of good work on the MagicBook 16 that's undone by its limited power source. But then again, you do get more than you should for the price, including a six-core AMD processor, a stunning display, a (mostly) solid body and an attractive design. Most laptop manufacturers would charge you a lot more than £800 for such things, so take it for what it is. It's the technological equivalent of Cinderella's pumpkin carriage: it doesn't last long, but it's absolutely magical while it does.

Like several Honor laptops, the MagicBook 16 is a top deal. Just don’t come expecting an actual miracle. The touchpad is plastic, and its tacky surface pulls off a much less persuasive impersonation of glass than some. Those spotlight-stealing speakers? Nah, they’re no good. And while the Ryzen 5 5600H packs a punch, its performance in the games we tried is a little worse than what you’d get from a low voltage Intel CPU laptop, which looks much less powerful on paper.

If you need a well-rounded 16-inch laptop that won't cost you the earth, and you don’t mind the average battery life or the sheer size of it, the Honor MagicBook 16 (2022) is worth adding to your shortlist.

Honor:

In 2014 Huawei created the sub brand Honor and offers certain smartphone series under this name. Occasionally the products are also called Huawei Honor.

The market share of Honor products is manageable, but there are several reviews on Honor smartphones with average ratings (as of 2016).

Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.

NVIDIA GeForce MX150: Pascal GP108 based laptop graphics card and mobile version of the desktop GeForce GT 1030. Offers 384 shader cores and usually 2 GB GDDR5 with a 64 Bit memory bus. Manufactured in 14nm.

AMD Vega 8: Integrated graphics card of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 8 CUs (= 512 shaders) and a clock of up to 1100 MHz.

AMD Vega 6: Integrated graphics adapter of the Ryzen APUs based on the Vega architecture with 6 CUs (= 384 shaders) and a clock of up to 1,500 MHz.

Intel Iris Xe G7 96EUs: Integrated graphics card in Intel Tiger Lake G4 SoCs based on the new Gen. 12 architecture with 96 EUs (Execution Units / Shader Cluster). The clock rate depends on the processor model. The Tiger Lake chips are produced in the modern 10nm+ process at Intel.

Intel Kaby Lake Refresh:

i5-8250U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,100 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

i5-8550U: Kaby-Lake-Refresh based low power quad-core processor. The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading. The integrated GPU is clocked between 300 and 1,150 MHz. The SoC is manufactured in a 14nm+ FinFET process.

AMD Raven Ridge (Ryzen 2000 APU):

R5 2500U: Mobile APU that integrates four Zen cores clocked at 2 to 3.6 GHz. The TDP is configurable between 12 to 25 Watt (15 W nominal) and the integrated Radeon RX Vega 8 is clocked at up to 1100 MHz.

AMD Picasso (Ryzen 3000 APU):

R5 3500U: Mobile Quad-Core APU using Zen+ cores clocked at 2.1 to 3.7 GHz and a Vega iGPU with 8 CUs running at up to 1200 MHz.

AMD Renoir (Ryzen 4000 APU):

R5 4500U: An upper mid-range, hexa-core APU designed for use in thinner, lighter laptops. The Ryzen features Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.3 GHz to 4.0 GHz along with the Vega 6 graphics adapter (6 x 64 = 384 unified shaders). The thread-doubling SMT technology is not enabled in the case of Ryzen 5 4500U.

Intel Tiger Lake:

i7-1165G7: An upper mid-range, quad-core processor of Tiger Lake product family. The i7 is designed for use in ultra-light (yet actively cooled) laptops; it is manufactured on Intel's third-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin. The CPU cores run at 2.8 GHz (base clock speed @ 28 W TDP) to 4.7 GHz (single-core Boost frequency). This i7 features the 96 EU Intel Iris Xe G7 iGPU; it was the second-fastest CPU of TGL-UP3 line-up when Intel initially launched the series in 2020.

i5-1135G7: A quad-core, mid-range processor of Tiger Lake product family designed for use in ultra-light laptops. The i5 is manufactured on Intel's second-gen 10 nm process marketed as SuperFin and features an 80 EU Iris Xe G7 iGPU. Core i5-1135G7 has a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz as long as it is allowed to consume 28 watts.

i5-11320H: Tiger Lake (H35 series) based mid range SoC for thin and light gaming laptops and workstations. The four CPU cores clock with 2.5 - 3.2 GHz base clock (28 - 35 W TDP) and up to 4.5 GHz Boost clock. The integrated G7 GPU offers 96 cores at 400 - 1350 MHz.

i7-11390H: Tiger Lake (H35 series) based high end quad-core SoC for thin and light gaming laptops and workstations. The four CPU cores clock with 2.9 - 3.4 GHz base clock (28 - 35 W TDP) and up to 5 GHz Boost clock. The integrated G7 GPU offers 96 cores at 400 - 1400 MHz.

AMD Lucienne (Zen 2, Ryzen 5000):

R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.

AMD Cezanne (Zen 3, Ryzen 5000):

R5 5600H: A mobile Hexa-Core APU with six Zen 3 cores clocked at 3.3 GHz to 4.2 GHz and a Vega iGPU with 7 CUs clocked at up to 1800 MHz.

14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.

The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact. 

In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
