Anyone looking for the best smartphone cameras might also want to check out DxOMark, where the rankings have recently shifted following the recent camera test of the Honor Magic8 Pro. Honor's camera flagship is now in the top 5, right behind the Vivo X200 Ultra, the Apple iPhone 17 Pro, the Oppo Find X9 Ultra and the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra. However, Honor clearly needs to improve in one test category. Update: The ranking has changed once again; the Honor Magic8 Pro is now in 6th position.

The Honor Magic8 Pro has just arrived in the UK and is expected to be released in Europe soon. In France, a test model was put through its paces in DxOMark's test lab, where it knocked the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL out of the top 5 in the ranking of the best smartphone cameras with a score of 165 points. Its predecessor, the Honor Magic7 Pro, is now quite far down in the ranking, but the Honor Magic6 Pro took the top spot in 2024, so fifth place for the Magic8 Pro is respectable but not a record for Honor.

Competition was very strong in 2025: the top 5 includes the Vivo X200 Ultra, the Oppo Find X8 Ultra, the Huawei Pura 80 Ultra and Apple's iPhone 17 Pro. What is striking about the detailed scoring is that Honor doesn't dominate any of the DxOMark test categories, but rather performs well in almost all of them, though without achieving any new top scores. At 154 points in the video score, however, the Magic8 Pro only ranks 15th in the custom ranking of the best smartphones specifically for video. Here, the iPhone 17 Pro dominates.

Except for video, the Honor Magic8 Pro delivers very good results, but nowhere does it achieve a top score.

Not really suitable for video professionals

The testers praise the generally good lighting and high dynamics in photos and videos in most scenarios, the high level of detail in bright ambient light and with distant objects, and the neutral white balance with good skin tones in photos. The bokeh in portraits and the generally low noise levels are also praised. However, there is also a comparatively long list of negative aspects, especially when it comes to video, which is reflected in the rather low score.

For example, incorrect colors and unstable lighting in videos, as well as a lot of noise and a loss of detail in low light or indoor videos, especially when objects are moving in the scene, are sometimes mentioned. The testers also observed artifacts such as ghosting or color fringing in videos. When taking group photos of several people, you should also pay attention to the focus, as the depth of field appears to be somewhat limited. The entire test with its many photos and videos can be found here
