The Honor Magic8 Pro continues the camera philosophy of the Magic7 Pro, but shifts the focus slightly: less flexibility in terms of aperture, but more stability, range, and consistency. For the main camera, the Magic8 Pro retains the 50 MP sensor of its predecessor, but does away with the variable aperture (f/1.4 - f/2.0) of the Magic7 Pro, which offered more creative control over depth of field and lighting. Instead, it fixes on an f/1.6 aperture and adds optimized optical stabilization (CIPA 5.5), resulting in more consistent daylight and nighttime shots, albeit with a tendency toward brighter, more saturated rendering.
In addition, the focal length of the main lens changes from 24 mm (Magic7 Pro) to 23 mm (Magic8 Pro). We took a few comparison photos during the European launch in London. For easier comparison, we have added watermarks:

The periscope telephoto zoom remains the highlight of both smartphones with 200 MPix: The Magic7 Pro shines with 3x optics and a high level of detail, but suffers from crop-related noise at high levels; the Magic8 Pro tops this with 3.7x optics, a larger module, and sharper results even in low light, including up to 100x AI zoom. The 50 MPix ultra-wide angle is solid on both, with marginally better edge sharpness on the successor, while the selfie setup (50 MPix plus 3D depth sensor) on the Magic8 Pro separates and stabilizes slightly more precisely in portraits and 4K/60 FPS videos.

Overall, the Magic8 Pro delivers slightly clearer images, especially in the dark. However, when zooming, its predecessor also has its strong moments and can deliver better results.
