Google has announced Android XR as the operating system that will power headsets and smart glasses in the future. The OS, created in collaboration with Samsung, will make its debut in a Samsung headset that will be available for purchase in 2025.

Google has announced a new operating system that will power virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) headsets. Called Android XR, the operating system was built in collaboration with Samsung, and will also support smart glasses in the future.

According to a press release, Android XR is the result of years of investment in AI, AR, and VR. The first Android XR device will be available to buy in 2025 and will be manufactured by Samsung. Code named Project Moohan, the device will be a headset and should be a rival to Meta's Quest 3 (available on Amazon for $499).

Because Android XR is based on Android, apps from the Play Store will work right out of the box. However, there will be special apps made for XR that will arrive next year. Some of these apps include special versions of YouTube and Google TV that will let you watch content on a virtual big screen. There will also be a version of Google Photos that lets you view your photos in 3D.

Android XR will also bring features such as Circle to Search while Glasses powered by the operating system will bring Gemini, allowing users to access features such as translations, directions, and message summaries. Android XR glasses will also provide real-time tutorials. Google already demoed a smart glasses with some of these features and you can see it in the video below.

Google has also revealed that it is partnering with companies such as Qualcomm whose own partners include Lynx, Sony, and XREAL for the development of a variety of Android XR devices that meet the various needs of consumers and businesses. It is also continuing its collaboration with Magic Leap on XR technology and future products with AR and AI.

Google's plan for Android XR is similar to what it does with Android. It will be an open and unified platform but consumers and businesses will have a variety of devices and apps to choose from to cater to their needs. So we can expect a variety of Android XR devices with different features and prices.
