Recent demo videos of Google’s new mixed reality operating system, Android XR, suggest that the familiar "Hey Google" hotword used to activate Google Assistant on Android devices may soon be a thing of the past. Google aims to position Gemini as its primary AI assistant and will likely introduce a new voice command to accompany it.

On December 11, Google unveiled a major update for Gemini. Version 2.0 will introduce native image and voice capabilities while integrating services like Spotify, WhatsApp and Google Home alongside Google Search. Scheduled for a broad rollout in early 2025, the update is part of Google’s strategy to position Gemini as a next-generation AI and set it apart from the traditional Google Assistant.

Current signs suggest that the hotword "Hey Google" may soon be replaced. Instead, Android users will likely activate their AI assistant with the command "Hey Gemini." This change was hinted at during the recent announcement of Android XR, Google’s new operating system for mixed reality headsets and smart glasses.

In the latest Android XR demo videos shared by Android Police on YouTube, the hotword "Hey Gemini" is mentioned for the first time. This signals that Gemini will play a central role in AI-powered devices and platforms going forward. It’s also expected that "Hey Gemini" will soon replace the familiar "Hey Google" on Android smartphones like the Google Pixel 9. However, it remains unclear when exactly this change will take place.
