Google has confirmed to Android Authority that the latest Feature Drop will introduce two new features to Pixel smartphones that extend the battery life. The first function is the option of limiting charging processes to 80%. If this option is activated in the system settings, Pixel smartphones will only charge their batteries to 80%.
Interestingly, bypass charging now automatically activates when the battery has been charged to 80% and the smartphone is not disconnected from the charger. This means that the smartphone is powered directly via the USB-C cable without detouring via the battery. This has two advantages. Firstly, the smartphone runs cooler when the battery is not being used, making it more comfortable to hold while gaming with the charging cable plugged in. Secondly, bypass charging protects the battery, which can extend its service life, especially if a smartphone is subject to frequent recharging for long periods of time.
The bypass charging feature may also be added to the Google Pixel Tablet if it is used as a control center for the smart home in conjunction with the associated docking station as intended by Google. Batteries are particularly stressed when they are fully charged or discharged. Bypass charging can increase the number of charging cycles of a smartphone slightly over the years, while the charging limit of 80% generally extends the service life as long as the battery is not drained to almost 0% every day.
