New generations of smartphones are usually limited in terms of improvements and upgrades. By contrast, the Google Pixel 9 Pro has changed a lot, especially in terms of size. Compared to the Pixel 8 Pro, it has shrunk from 6.7 to 6.3 inches, making it one of the smallest flagship smartphones currently. It is particularly well positioned in terms of cameras, display and battery life.
Equipped for all kinds of photography
With its triple camera, the Google Pixel 9 Pro is one of the best in its class. It covers all kinds of photography scenarios, ranging from macro to telephoto, and impresses with very good image quality. The LTPO OLED display (1 - 120 Hz) of Google's 6.3-inch device is also very impressive. It utilizes two OLED panels and thus reaches a very high brightness level of around 2,000 cd/m². With HDR, it even achieves almost 3,000 cd/m².
Longer runtimes despite smaller battery
Although the Pixel 9 Pro is brighter than the already very bright Pixel 8 Pro, it also has better battery life despite its smaller battery. In simulated web surfing, the smartphone manages a strong 16:57 hours. With NFC, UWB, WiFi 7 and plenty of mobile frequencies, the connectivity standards are also first-class. Another selling point is the seven-year update promise.
Some weaknesses remain
However, the Pixel 9 Pro cannot be commended all across the board. In direct comparison with other high-end smartphones, its Tensor G4 SoC is not particularly fast and its UFS 3.1 memory is also only mediocre. Google is also stingy about the storage, as the base model, priced at $849, only comes with 128 GB of storage, which is no longer up to date in 2024. At a maximum of 27 watts, the charging speed is also not particularly fast: a full charging cycle took almost 100 minutes in our tests.
