Early details about the first Asus VR headset have surfaced online. While the device will run Meta's Horizon OS, it is slated to arrive under Asus' Republic of Gamers (ROG) division like recent ROG Zephyrus G14 and ROG Zephyrus G16 refreshes.

Almost a year has passed since Meta outlined that Asus, Lenovo and Microsoft were working towards releasing virtual reality (VR) headsets running its Meta Horizon operating system. However, none of the partners mentioned in Meta's April 2024 press release have revealed anything since. Instead, Meta released the Quest 3S as a cheaper entry into the VR space while simultaneously discontinuing the Quest Pro.

Now, new rumours about Asus' first VR headset have emerged online, including its codename 'Tarius'. Reportedly, the company intends to offer the device under its Republic of Gamers (ROG) division, which it recently expanded with a slew of new devices at CES 2025 like the ROG NUC (2025), ROG Zephyrus G14, ROG Zephyrus G16 and ROG Flow Z13.

According to the same source, the Asus ROG Tarius will support eye and face tracking, unlike Meta's Quest 3 and Quest 3S (curr. $299 on Amazon). It also seems that Asus has been developing prototypes with different displays. Allegedly, the ROG Tarius could arrive with Micro OLED panels, which are famed for their high pixel density and peak brightness levels. Alternatively, QD-LCD panels with local dimming could be on the cards, likely to hit a lower price point. Unfortunately, release details still remain unknown at this point.
