Samsung appears to be working on a hologram projector with smart glasses, according to a patent application recently published in the US. The display device has already appeared in patents in Korea, and is also described as an augmented reality (AR) gadget.
The Samsung patent outlines a “projector-type” device that can produce extended reality content images, like holograms. The technology behind the device includes a liquid crystal display panel, which acts as a spatial light modulator, coupled with a background light source. The patent notes that the projector is designed to be portable and can be mounted on a ceiling or wall. It also mentions that the display could be “assembled in structures”, though no further explanation is provided.
This is accompanied by a “glasses-type” wearable containing a similar display device within the frame. One diagram in the patent application shows projected 2D images, while another illustrates a 3D projection of a book. It is unclear when Samsung could launch this extended reality content device or any product that could produce holograms. Another recent report suggests that Samsung will launch AI Smart Glasses in 2025, a competitor for the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses (curr. $299 at Amazon).
