The Vision Pro is a ~$3,500 mixed-reality headset with top-end hardware and the power of Apple Silicon behind it, yet is increasingly seen as lacking in many ways compared to conventional PCs, gaming included. The Cupertino-based behemoth is now reportedly working with Sony to try and rectify that with support for the controllers that come with the very similar PlayStation VR 2 (PSVR 2).

Sony's virtual reality (VR) division has accrued headset design and development expertise as demonstrated in the PlayStation VR (PSVR) 2 (currently available at $499.99 on Amazon); however, it is also reportedly in desperate need of a lifeline.

Now, it seems one might have been thrown by none other than Apple, an OEM for whom the VR struggle is also real in the form of the first-gen Vision Pro and its increasingly tepid public reception.

According to well-known tech Bloomberg contributor Mark Gurman, that has a lot to do with Apple's insistence on marketing the Vision Pro as a "spatial computer" with a futuristic gesture-based interface rather than unlocking its potential to work with accessories such as controllers.

Those decisions have demonstrably resulted in a very un-Apple failure to cash in on such officially-licensed optional purchases and also helped hamstring the Vision Pro as a next-gen gaming device.

However, Apple is now reportedly considering upgrading visionOS with support for the PSVR 2's pre-existing Sense Controllers.

They are never normally sold separately, although Sony might change that and sell them through Apple Stores as part of this new partnership.

However, this project has also apparently been postponed once already, and might end up being suspended outright prior to its realization.

In the meantime, Apple is also reportedly considering the development of other peripherals such as its take on Sony's Motion Controller, a one-handed, more wand-like accessory for conventional PlayStations as well as PSVR hardware.

However, it is allegedly intended as more of an Apple Pencil-like productivity booster for the Vision Pro rather than a gaming accessory.
