Garmin smartwatch users get new navigation page tool

Garmin’s Approach J1 smartwatch is receiving its first software update. This golfing watch for kids, with features including an AMOLED display, GPS and over 43,000 preloaded courses, was released in January 2026.
In a recent post on the Garmin Forum, the company announced System Software Version 8.09. The release notes state that it updates the Approach J1’s tee box navigation page, adding a hole indicator. Plus, there is a new message which pops up before a phone is paired, reminding users that they can use a child-specific account.
Also listed in the change log is a bug fix linked to the Manage Clubs function. The issue where this would be hidden unexpectedly upon pairing a smartphone is said to have been resolved. Alongside this, the release brings updated translations to the golfing smartwatch.
System Software Version 8.09 is now available for all units of the Garmin Approach J1 smartwatch (curr. $299.99 at Amazon). Users of the Garmin Golf app should receive this update automatically when the watch is paired to their smartphone. Alternatively, you can trigger the update through the Garmin Express software.
