Garmin brings ECG app support to Fenix 7 Pro, Epix 2 Pro, Tactix 7 AMOLED Edition and Venu 3 smartwatches
Garmin has expanded the eligibility of one of its popular apps to more smartwatches. To recap, the company announced the MARQ Carbon Collection a few days ago, which it followed by introducing a Sleep Pulse Ox widget that may be targeted at detecting sleep apnea. Now, the US' Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared Garmin's electrocardiogram (ECG) app for use with various smartwatches that Garmin has released in recent months.
Specifically, the FDA has allowed Garmin to expand the app's usage to the Epix 2 Pro, Fenix 7 Pro and Venu 3 series, as well as to the Tactix 7 AMOLED Edition. Thus, it is now possible to record heart rhythms with these smartwatches to check for signs of atrial fibrillation (AFib) without needing specialist equipment. In a press release, Garmin clarifies that the software records 30-second ECGs, which can be viewed immediately on a compatible smartwatch or in the Garmin Connect smartphone app.
Please note that there are some caveats to the ECG app's expansion. For one, it remains geofenced to Hong Kong, Vietnam and the US. Additionally, Garmin only intends its ECG app to be used by people at least 22 years old. It is also worth noting that the ECG app will appear on Epix 2 Pro, Fenix 7 Pro, Tactix 7 AMOLED Edition and Venu 3 smartwatches once their paired smartphones are running Garmin's latest software builds.
