It should now be possible to more closely analyse your sleep quality when using a Garmin smartwatch and an iPhone or iPad. As of Garmin Connect v4.71, iOS and iPadOS will be able to access sleep stage data, not just sleep duration.

Garmin is now rolling out sleep-tracking improvements for its smartwatches paired with iOS devices. Theoretically, this should also apply to the Vivoactive 5, which the company unveiled earlier today. Please see our dedicated launch article for full details about Vivoactive 5 and how it differs from earlier models.

According to the likes of Gadget & Wearables, Garmin has refined the sleep data it allows its Connect app to synchronise with Apple Health. Previously, the Garmin Connect app would only provide sleep duration times to Apple Health. However, the company has now expanded its data sharing to include sleep stages.

For reference, Garmin determines sleep stages by interpolating heart rate variability and accelerometer data. While it is unclear why it took Garmin so long to offer this additional data to Apple Health. However, Gadget & Wearables speculates that it could have been timed for the release of iPadOS 17, which is the first time that Apple Health has been viewable on iPads. Garmin's improved sleep data sharing is available in Garmin Connect v4.71 or newer.
