A new update has arrived for current flagship Garmin smartwatches. Currently distributed through the company's Beta Program, the update is available for Pro and non-Pro smartwatches, unlike its predecessor.

Garmin has published a new update for the Fenix 7 series and its peers. For context, Beta Version 16.17 arrives in the wake of a slew of updates for recent Forerunner models, including the Forerunner 255 and Forerunner 965. Additionally, Garmin has released Beta Version 16.17 roughly a week after Beta Version 16.16 landed with a dozen big fixes and improvements.

By contrast, Beta Version 16.17 makes far fewer changes. However, it appears to be available for all models, unlike the 'Non-Pro' restriction that applied to Beta Version 16.16. As a result, we suspect that all the changes contained within Beta Version 16.16 have been rolled into Beta Version 16.17 for the likes of the Epix 2 Pro and Fenix 7 Pro series.

In the case of the former, Garmin claims to have addressed two outstanding bugs. On the one hand, Beta Version 16.17 should resolve an issue where selecting 'lap undo' could cause HR and power zone data to be dropped. On the other hand, the same update is said to fix a potential issue where a device could shut down when connected to a computer while in an activity. The full change log for Pro devices updating to Beta Version 16.17 is as follows:

  • Fixed a UI issue where Lap Discarded banner would not fully animate out right away.
  • Fixed a UI issue where multisport message would not show up in the settings menu.
  • Fixed issue where jump rope reps would be missing from activity history page.
  • Fixed issue where lap undo could cause HR zone and power zone data to be dropped.
  • Fixed issue where swimming activities would not generate personal records.
  • Fixed issue where the inReach remote page would show up for a multisport transition.
  • Fixed possible crash when deleting a course.
  • Fixed possible crash when resetting device to default settings.
  • Fixed possible issue where jump rope activities would not disable the auto-enable setting for a power mode.
  • Fixed possible issue where mini map would be missing from activities.
  • Fixed potential issue where a device could shut down when connected to a computer while in an activity.
  • Fixed potential shutdown when launching a workout in the workouts app.
  • Removed Find My Phone during GPS Activity.
  • Updated translations.
