First hands-on video with dummy hints at how Samsung's iPhone Ultra rival feels in hand

2026 wird das Jahr der kompakten Foldables mit breitem Tablet-Display im 3:2 oder 4:3 Format. Nach dem Huawei Pura X Max kommt bald Samsung mit dem offenbar schlicht Galaxy Z Fold 8 benannten "Wide-Fold" auf den Markt, bevor dann Apple im September mit seinem ersten faltbaren iPhone der Kategorie neue Impulse verleihen wird. Auch Xiaomi soll, jüngsten Hinweisen zufolge, bald auf diesen neuen Formfaktor setzen, der sich vor allem durch ein breiteres und kompakteres Gehäuse auszeichnet und aufgeklappt ein etwas iPad Mini artiges Tablet im Breitformat liefert.

Laut interner Tests bei Samsung ist das Feedback zum breiten Nachfolger des Galaxy Z Fold 7 (hier bei Amazon erhältlich) überaus positiv, insbesondere die laut geleakter Maße sehr dünne Bauweise von gerade mal 9,8 mm (zusammengeklappt) scheint hier auf viel Gegenliebe zu stoßen - Apples iPhone Ultra dürfte da nicht mithalten können. Ein erstes noch sehr krudes Dummy des "Galaxy Z Wide Fold" haben wir bereits mal in Fotos gesehen, nun wird ein schon deutlich realistischer aussehendes "Design-Modell" in einem ersten Hands-On-Video auch von mehreren Seiten in die Kamera gehalten.

Auch wenn dieses Dummy schon deutlich mehr nach echtem Handy aussieht - ein paar Unterschiede im Detail dürfte das Design der finalen Version noch bringen. Aufgeklappt ist das Samsung-Foldable mit 4,3 mm sogar noch dünner als das Galaxy S25 Edge mit 5,8 mm - natürlich an der dünnsten Stelle gemessen, nicht am Kamera-Buckel. Ähnlich wie das Apple-Foldable setzt Samsung hier auf eine Dual-Cam. Bei Xiaomi soll es dagegen wie bei Huawei eine Triple-Cam geben.
 

As it seems, 2026 is shaping up to be the year of compact foldables featuring a 3:2 or 4:3 wide display in tablet mode. Following the release of the Huawei Pura X Max, Samsung is set to launch its “wide fold” model soon (reportedly called simply the Galaxy Z Fold 8), with Apple expected to enter the market with the first foldable iPhone later in September. According to recent reports, Xiaomi is also preparing to adopt this emerging form factor. Characterized mainly by a wider and more compact body, this layout unfolds into a widescreen tablet reminiscent of an iPad Mini.

Based on Samsung’s internal testing, feedback on the wide successor to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (starting at $1,600 on Amazon) has been overwhelmingly positive. In particular, the extremely thin design – rumored to be just 9.8 mm (0.39 in) thick when folded – appears to be very well received. Apple’s iPhone Ultra is unlikely to match this level of thinness. We have previously seen photos of a very crude early dummy of the “Galaxy Z Wide Fold”, and now an early hands-on video has emerged showcasing a much more realistic design mockup from multiple angles.

Although this mockup already looks far closer to a real device, some design details may still differ from the final product. When unfolded, Samsung’s upcoming foldable (4.3 mm, or 0.17 in) is apparently even slimmer than the Galaxy S25 Edge (5.8 mm, 0.23 in) – measured at its thinnest point rather than at the camera bump. As with the rumored Apple foldable, Samsung appears to be using a dual-camera setup. In contrast, Xiaomi is reportedly planning to include a triple-camera system on its new foldable, just like Huawei.
