The OnePlus 15 has a good camera system. But can it compete with the very best?
The OnePlus 15's camera system has suffered some setbacks this year: no more Hasselblad branding and less light-sensitive lenses. Can the new Lumo engine compensate for these shortcomings?

The OnePlus 15 caused quite a stir even before its release, primarily due to its scaled-back camera system.

We have now had the opportunity to thoroughly test and take a closer look at its camera system. So, what is behind all the fuss that has been spreading online?

What the OnePlus 15's camera system offers

Let's start with the facts.

  • At a starting price of around $1000, the OnePlus 15 is somewhat cheaper than many other high-end phones.
  • All rear camera sensors have a resolution of 50 MP. At f/1.8, the aperture and therefore the light sensitivity are only average.
  • The main camera of the OnePlus 15 uses a Sony IMX906 sensor. This sensor is typically found in second-tier phones, such as the Realme GT8 Pro.
  • The telephoto camera has an aperture of f/2.8, significantly less than the f/2.1 offered by some high-end cameras. It provides 3.5x optical zoom.
  • The Hasselblad branding is gone, replaced by Oppo's Lumo engine, which has already made a strong impression on other phones.

A direct comparison with a Hasselblad phone

Last year's Oppo Find X8 Pro has Hasselblad branding. Here we can draw a direct comparison.

Indeed, the photo from the OnePlus 15 appears to have slightly less contrast, but you can still discern high accuracy and good sharpness in the details.

Zoom quality

Of course, we also take a look at how well the OnePlus 15 performs when using its zoom capabilities. Optically, the main camera offers up to 7x magnification. Even images zoomed in 10x still appear very sharp and detailed.

The AI naturally helps refine the images and does a really good job. Even 60x magnification is detailed, although it's impossible to say for sure whether the AI has preserved every single detail.

The maximum zoom is 120x, at which point the image does become somewhat grainy.

Verdict on the camera system

The OnePlus 15 comes with a solid camera system, but due to its weaker sensors and lower low-light sensitivity, it can't quite compete with more expensive high-end phones. On the other hand, Oppo's Lumo engine actually works well and the AI makes even heavily zoomed-in shots surprisingly sharp.
