Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition: Garmin presents new 'eco-orientated' dive computer with recycled ocean-bound plastics

Garmin has refreshed the Descent G1 series, over eight months after it launched the Descent G1 and Descent G1 Solar. Incidentally, the new Descent G1 model arrives on the same day as the Descent MK3, which we have covered separately. As far as we can tell, the new Descent G1 model differs from its siblings in one area, albeit one that Garmin wishes to boast about.

The device in question is the Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition, which comes in a single 'Azure' colourway. While the new model is aimed at divers, its name does not relate to its underwater capabilities. Instead, Garmin claims to have manufactured the Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition using recycled 'ocean-bound plastics', a decision that makes it the company's 'most sustainable multiuse watch ever'.

Although Garmin has not clarified the source of these plastics, it has confirmed that only the watch's buttons, bezel and housing use this material. Thus, the Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition still ships with a silicone watch strap. The Ocean Edition retails for US$649.99, meaning that it price matches the Descent G1 Solar Edition.
