Compared to runners, cyclists have it very easy when it comes to power measurement, as the power exerted by the rider while cycling can be measured very accurately rather than just more or less accurately estimated. In this context, Garmin has just launched two new power meters, which differ significantly in price. These are not just sensors, but pedals, which are compatible with cleats from the Shimano SPD, Shimano SPD-SL and Look Keo systems, so you can continue to wear your favorite cycling shoes. They are also compatible with oval chainrings.
The Rally 110 is a single-sided power meter. This isn't a major problem in principle, but it does limit the range of functions. For example, users cannot specifically measure whether and to what extent power differs between the two legs, meaning imbalances cannot be detected with the Rally 110. The Rally 210 comes with sensors in both pedals and is also advertised as displaying advanced cycling dynamics, such as analysis of time spent sitting and standing. The strain gauges used for measurement can be calibrated, and a gyroscope is installed. The system is designed to respond very quickly to changes in force. A "measurement accuracy" of “+/- 1%” is specified. ANT+ and Bluetooth for connecting to compatible bike computers or smartwatches are supported. The battery life is said to be up to 90 hours.
Starting prices are stated as $749.99 (Rally 110) and $1,199.99 (Rally 210).
