CD Projekt Red launches Witcher 3 Remastered with over 40 mods on PS5

CD Projekt Red has released The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Remastered, opening the game to community mods on consoles for the first time, with more than 40 available on PS5 at launch. The Remaster arrived on 29 September (today) as a free update for existing owners on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside native releases on Nintendo Switch 2 and Battle.net.
Players find and install mods through an in-game browser built on mod.io, which can be accessed from the main menu, and mods are shared across platforms. The number of console mods is expected to rise sharply in the coming weeks. However, using mods disables trophies on PS5 and achievements on Xbox Series X|S.
The launch selection mixes small gameplay changes with cosmetic ones. Mods on PS5 include options that remove fall damage and let players win Gwent matches automatically, according to MeuPlayStation. Others improve Geralt's eyebrows, remodel Ciri, Yennefer and Triss, and adjust equipment to match descriptions in the Witcher books. Brazilian site Critical Hits noted that the initial catalogue remains relatively small, with many mods making only minor tweaks.
Console players receive a curated selection rather than the full PC library. Mods must meet the requirements of each platform, and CD Projekt Red has said those built with its official REDkit tools have the best chance of approval. Switch 2 players get most mods, with restrictions under Nintendo's guidelines and the console's technical limits.
CD Projekt Red first announced cross-platform mod support back in May of 2025, planning to deliver it in a final patch that year. The studio later pushed the feature into 2026 before bundling it with the Remaster. The Witcher 3 had around 7,700 mods on Nexus Mods at the time of the original announcement. On PS5, the Remaster downloads as a 45GB patch for owners of the Complete Edition. The Xbox Series X|S version adds Play Anywhere support, which the game did not previously have on Xbox.
The Remaster holds a Metacritic score of 94, making it the highest-rated game of 2026 so far. That places it ahead of twin-stick shooter Sektori, which also scored 94 but ranks lower under Metacritic's calculations, and above the 92 scored by the original Witcher 3. Beyond visuals, the Remaster brings enhanced combat and traversal and new sound effects for certain powers. CD Projekt Red has also overhauled skill trees and added new quest markers, and existing saves and achievements carry over from the original game.
Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine are now free for anyone who owns the base game. CD Projekt Red has put its remake of the first Witcher game on hold while it works on Songs of the Past, a paid expansion for The Witcher 3 due in 2027.
