CD Projekt Red confirms The Witcher 4 gets a physical edition even if PlayStation discs disappear

CD Projekt Red is committing to a boxed physical edition for The Witcher 4, regardless of whether Sony's manufacturing policies prevent the inclusion of a physical game disc. The upcoming Ciri-led sequel is currently targeting a 2028 release window. This aligns with Sony’s recently announced January 2028 cutoff for new physical PlayStation disc production.

In an interview with The Game Business, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Michał Nowakowski clarified that the studio cannot control first-party manufacturing pipelines. If Sony permanently halts disc printing at its factories, The Witcher 4 will launch without a PlayStation 5 disc.

Nowakowski explained that the development team members consider themselves nerds who strongly favor giving players access to tangible collectibles. He guaranteed the studio will produce a physical box containing extra merchandise that fans will enjoy opening, regardless of physical disc formats.

While CD Projekt Red has not confirmed specific contents for The Witcher 4, the studio has a history of including extra merchandise in standard physical editions. Base copies of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and Cyberpunk 2077 included physical world maps, universe compendiums, postcards, and developer thank-you letters. If the industry transitions to an all-digital format by 2028, buyers of the physical box will likely find a game download code sitting alongside these tangible extras.
