The launch of Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ first major DLC, Claws of Awaji, has not gone as planned. Just one day after release, the game’s overall rating on Steam has sunk to “Very Negative,” with players reporting that the expansion cannot even be accessed despite being purchased and installed.
According to dozens of user reviews, the quest required to start the DLC fails to appear in the game’s hideout, even for players with 100% save files. Some report only being able to access a small side mission involving a bo staff, while the promised Awaji Island content remains locked.
Player backlash has been swift and pointed. One user who pre-ordered the Deluxe Edition complained that despite completing all prerequisites, they still had no access to the DLC, warning others not to buy it until Ubisoft makes it playable. Another user noted that the quest to start the expansion does not appear in the hideout even with a 100% save file. Frustration over Ubisoft’s quality control was echoed across multiple reviews, with one player bluntly stating that the company “couldn’t even launch DLC without problems.”
A number of players expressed anger at having spent over $100 on deluxe editions and premium content only to find the expansion locked behind what appears to be a launch-day bug.
The Claws of Awaji DLC was marketed as the first major story expansion for Assassin’s Creed Shadows. At the time of writing, Ubisoft has not issued a public statement on the widespread complaints, but the volume of “Not Recommended” reviews suggests many fans are advising others to hold off on purchasing until fixes are rolled out.
