Rumors about a potential Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake gained a significant boost earlier due to comments by Edward Kenway’s voice actor, Matt Ryan. Ryan may have teased a return to Black Flag, but behind closed doors, this may have stirred a world of trouble for him as publisher Ubisoft threatened to sue the voice actor over his revelations.
Earlier, at a fan convention in June 2025, Ryan, who voiced Black Flag’s protagonist in the 2013 title, interacted with a fan while autographing merchandise. Ryan asked if the fan had beaten the game and teased that they might have to beat it again. During the conversation, he quipped, “There’s a reason I say that, but I can’t say anything.” The original video was posted by TikTok user @therebelarchive, sending the community into a frenzy.
More recently, however, Ryan interacted with another fan, TikTok user @kylo-hd659, who filmed him at another convention, explaining that he got into trouble for his earlier comments. The video was later reposted by @TheHiddenOneAC on X.
When the fan asked about the Black Flag remake, Ryan played it safe and said, “I don’t know, mate. Well, the thing is, when that happened, someone was doing this.” By “doing this”, Ryan meant filming him without his knowledge.
Ryan further added, “I was being very free and open, but I didn’t know that they were recording me on their phone, and then the company threatened to sue me. Yeah, so I say nothing.”
Ubisoft’s threat of legal action against the voice actor doesn’t help the company’s case in keeping the upcoming project a secret. Rumors have been circulating regarding a potential Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag remake as early as 2023. It was reported that Ubisoft Singapore, the studio responsible for the original’s boating gameplay, was collaborating on the project.
The project, codenamed Obsidian, is expected to be released by November 2025. Furthermore, Pure Arts hinted at the remake during a May 2025 livestream, stating that something is going on with Edward Kenway.
A return to the original would be a breath of fresh air for Assassin’s Creed fans, as Black Flag still has an 88% positive user score out of 72,177 reviews on Steam. With no official announcement on the horizon, fans are eager to know if the rumors are true, but Ubisoft remains tight-lipped, at least officially.
