Apple Vision Pro: Plans for cheaper second-gen version outlined in more detail
According to Bloomberg tech correspondent Mark Gurman, work on the "Vision Pro 2" is already underway, and might solve some of the first-gen "spatial computer's" early teething problems. They are already known to include the inability to integrate prescription lenses "directly into the headset" as needed. The next-gen visionOS device might also have another new feature: a base model.
This rumored non-Pro headset is said to downgrade to an Axx-series processor rather than one from the Mx line, which would also drive lower-res displays in order to come in at a more attractive price-point. Then again, given Apple's track record, that discount is only said to bring the "Vision 2" down to perhaps US$1,500 at the cheapest to US$2,500 at the most.
In other words, this "lower-cost headset" might be the one that comes the closest to being an iPhone that can be strapped to the face yet. Apple just might be dismayed at the reception that the inaugural Vision Pro has received thus far, yet will reportedly persist with a second generation nonetheless, at the expense of the main alternative, which is apparently a pair of AR glasses.
One might question whether Apple might be advised to do the opposite instead, as that form-factor could be lighter, more portable and, above all, more familiar and potentially relatable to the putative user. Nevertheless, the "Vision Series 2" is tipped to launch some time after its predecessor's 2024 release.
