Earlier this week, we reported that owners of some early iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max units had noticed what appeared to be display burn-in problems after only a few weeks of use. In short, there were various anecdotes of app and status bar icons remaining visible indefinitely. Based on one report, even Apple's engineers considered the issue a hardware fault and were replacing entire devices.
According to 9to5Mac, Apple has informed it that the problem is actually temporary image retention, not OLED burn-in. Allegedly, Apple's calibration tools had been working improperly with some iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max units running iOS 17, which TV manufacturers often reference to as 'Pixel Refresher' or 'Screen Optimisation'. Typically, smartphones of all types carry out this function automatically, thereby reducing the chance of image retention setting in.
Purportedly, Apple will rectify the issue with iOS 17.1, a release candidate (RC) of which it has already pushed to beta testers. The company hopes that iOS 17.1 will improve on-screen keyboard response too, which it believes to have been a problem of sorts with iOS 17. As we have discussed separately, Apple is expected to release its first major iOS 17 update by October 24. However, there is every chance that Apple could distribute iOS 17.1 ahead of this date.
