Apple to pioneer moulded glass camera lenses starting with iPhone 16 Pro
New information about Apple's route to offering its tetra prism telephoto camera sensor has emerged online, courtesy of Money UDN. Previously, there were rumours that Apple would increase the size of next year's smaller Pro to accommodate its 5x telephoto camera. However, this should only increase the diagonal length of the iPhone 16 Pro by 0.2-inches compared to the current iPhone 15 Pro.
According to Money UDN, Apple is taking additional steps to ensure that the iPhone 16 Pro can house its 5x telephoto camera. Allegedly, the company will source moulded glass lenses for its 2024 flagships, which it will apply atop its telephoto cameras. The same report adds that Apple has turned to Largan Precision for this component, which currently has poor yields and is costly to produce.
Money UDN adds that Apple will be the first of many smartphone manufacturers to bring moulded glass lenses to their flagships in 2024, including BBK Electronics subsidiaries like Oppo and Vivo. Theoretically, the new lens type weighs less and is thinner than conventional glass without compromising magnification distance. Thus, the iPhone 16 Pro's telephoto camera should match the Pro Max's 120 mm equivalent focal length.
