Undoubtedly the two biggest concerns for anyone contemplating a move to full frame photography are cost and size/weight. However, with more affordable full-frame cameras on the market, and a growing need to distinguish image quality from smartphone cameras, third-party manufacturers are addressing the demand for compact, modestly priced full frame lenses. A prime (in more ways than one) example is the newly launched Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 FE, with its appealingly low US$158 price almost matching its 157 g weight.
At just 65 mm x 59.5 mm, the lens is ultra compact, but does not compromise on features. Its stepper motor (for silent autofocus), internal focussing and minimal focus breathing are all useful for videography, justifying its claim as a vlogging lens. While lacking its own image stabilisation, it is compatible with cameras’ IBIS and eye-detect AF, and has a built-in USB-C port for firmware upgrades.
The optical construction includes two ED elements, one high refractive index element and two aspherical ones to minimise chromatic and spherical aberration. The front element has a multilayer water-resistant and antifouling coating to prevent smudges. Minimum close focusing distance is 19 cm, making it suitable for close-ups and selfies.
While there are competing 20 mm lenses for full-frame E-mount cameras from Sigma, Tamron and Sony itself, they are nowhere near as cheap or lightweight as the one from Viltrox, even if they do sport larger apertures and possibly better optics. Photographers who need the best possible low-light performance and image quality might be better served by those lenses.
For someone who’s just venturing into full-frame photography, and whose wallet has already taken a hit from that expensive full frame body, this lens could be a no-brainer for building a lens kit. It is also rather versatile, being well suited for landscapes, close-ups, vlogging and other videography.
The Viltrox AF 20mm F2.8 FE can be pre-ordered online for US$158 and will start shipping from November 6.
