The Sony A9 III claims the title of the world's first full-frame camera with a global shutter. The 24.6 MP stacked CMOS sensor, along with the BIONZ XR image processor, delivers up to 120 FPS blackout-free shooting, and 4K 120 FPS video is possible without crop.

Rumours about the Sony Alpha 9 III have been floating around for some time, but Sony has finally launched the latest in its lineup of professional full-frame mirrorless cameras. While some of the rumoured features and specifications, like a global shutter, may have seemed far-fetched at the time, Sony managed to deliver on the promised global shutter, alongside various other impressive features that will push the market forward.

Sony A9 III specifications highlights:

  • 24.6 MP stacked CMOS sensor.
  • 8.0-stop five-axis in-body image stabilisation.
  • 4K video at 120 FPS with no crop.
  • Composite RAW shooting.
  • S-Cinetone and S-Log3 for video.
  • 9.44 million-dot, four-axis, touch-enabled OLED monitor.
  • 5 GHz Wi-Fi for fast file transfers via FTP.
  • Dual card slots with CFexpress Type A and UHS-I and UHS-III SD card support.

The global shutter is by far the headline feature of the 24.6 MP sensor in the Sony A9 III, being the first full-frame camera in the world to feature a global shutter, but that doesn't mean the A9 III doesn't have other tricks up its sleeve. For starters, the A9 III is capable of capturing stills at a rate of 120 FPS without blackout, and it will do so while performing autofocus and subject recognition calculations in between each shot.

The A9 III is capable of shutter speeds of up to 1/80,000 second — compared to the 1/32,000 second of the Nikon Z 9 and the 1/64,0000 second of the Canon EOS R3 — and flash sync all the way up to that 1/80,000 second limit.

On the video side of things, the A9 III can shoot at up to 4K 120 FPS without crop and 4K 60 FPS oversampled from 6K footage. Combine this high video framerate with the global shutter, which eliminates rolling shutter effects, and you get a very competent sports and wildlife camera for both video and stills work.

The Sony A9 III is available for pre-order in the US starting on November 8 an MSRP of US$5,999.99, and it will be available in January 2024 in other markets, starting at €7,000 in Europe and £6,100 in the UK.
