Kenko Tokina has launched the Kenko Toy Camera Pieni M, an antithesis to modern, classic cameras such as the powerful, high-resolution Fujifilm X100VI. Lighter than an ounce, the Pieni M captures 1.2 MP photos and 720p videos with character much like Polaroids.

Kenko Tokina has released the Kenko Toy Camera Pieni M to the delight of retro-photography enthusiasts. Unlike modern, high-resolution cameras that capture the tiniest of details, the Pieni M utilizes a less-is-more approach like impressionism that allows the human imagination to fill in the details.

Digital cameras like smartphones have been growing in average size and weight over time. 2004 saw pocket cameras like the Sony U40 selling well, and that petite model measured (83 x 39 x 26 mm) and weighed (114 grams). But since then, size and weight of point and shoot cameras inched upwards, with current models like the Sony RX100 VII weighing over two and a half times more.

The Pieni M is an antithesis to the modern norm with a very lightweight body and low-resolution sensor. This camera uses a 1/9-inch CMOS sensor to capture 1280 x 960 JPG images and 30fps 1280 x 720 AVI videos at ISO 100. The f/2.8 fixed-focus lens uses a 1/100 second shutter speed to capture objects between 11.8 inches to infinity (0.3m to infinity). Black and white, orange, blue, and green filters can be applied.

The toy camera can be worn on the included neck strap all day because it weighs a light 0.8 ounce (23 grams) and measures 2.5 x 1.4 x 0.7 inches (63 x 36 x 19 mm). Kenko manages to squeeze in a 0.96” LCD display with 12,000 pixels (dimensions unspecified, likely 128 x 96 pixels). The camera is compatible with 128 MB to 32 GB micro SD cards, and the battery recharges with a USB-C connection in 60 minutes.

The Pieni M is priced at 7,920 yen (approx. $49) and can be ordered on Kenko Tokina today in Black or Grayish Blue with shipments beginning March 15, 2024. Camera enthusiasts who still demand on using film should try a unique point and shoot (like this Kodak at Amazon).

You can shoot while checking the range of images on the LCD monitor.

You can change the color filter by pressing the MONITOR button in still image mode or movie mode.

Data is stored on microSD (sold separately). You can import it to your computer with the included USB cable.

Examples

It features a tasteful image like a watercolor or oil painting. The depiction is not as clear as the latest cameras and smartphones, which is refreshing. It comes with a color filter, so you can play with colors by making it monochrome or applying orange, blue, and green filters throughout.
