Logitech launches Mevo Core micro four thirds camera for wireless streaming, content creation
The micro four thirds (MFT) ecosystem has a surprising new member, with Logitech launching its first interchangeable lens camera, the Mevo Core. Thanks to its larger sensor, the Mevo Core offers significantly higher image quality than the typical webcam. At the same time, its wireless capabilities and integration with Logitech’s Mevo Multicam app helps keep the setup and workflow simpler than with more professionally oriented cameras.
The Mevo Core houses an 8.3 MP MFT CMOS sensor that captures up to 4K 30fps video in a 16:9 aspect ratio. HDR and electronic image stabilisation is built-in. No lens is included, but the MFT lens mount means one can choose from a wide selection from Panasonic (Lumix), OM System, SIGMA and Tamron, among others. Logitech recommends some lenses which are “pre-tested for optimal performance”, such as the OM System 14-42 mm EZ, the Sigma 16 mm f/1.4 and the LUMIX G 14-42 mm PZ. Support for MFT adapters, while currently unavailable, is on the roadmap.
The camera is a tastefully simple and compact black cube, with no screen or onboard controls (except a single button for powering on/off and starting/stopping recording). Instead, every shooting parameter on the Mevo Core is controlled wirelessly from the Mevo Multicam app, including exposure and metering settings, audio mixing, focus and even optical zoom, provided the attached lens supports it.
The Mevo Multicam app acts as the control centre for any setup involving one or more Mevo family cameras, including the smaller Mevo Start and the Mevo Go app (which turns your smartphone camera into a video source). With support for WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5.1, this should simplify the typically cumbersome task of getting a complicated camera setup up and running.
Video can be sent out via HDMI, NDI and SRT protocols, and the Mevo Multicam app supports direct live streaming to YouTube, Twitch, Facebook Live and other platforms. It can also be used as a webcam on popular video conferencing platforms like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, etc.
On the audio front, the Mevo Core has a three mic array that features spatial audio processing and ambient noise reduction. However, many live streaming scenarios typically employ a dedicated audio feed from external mics or interfaces. For such cases, over and above the usual 3.5 mm TRS input and audio over USB-C, one can also route audio from a mic plugged into the controlling mobile device, or from the Mevo Go app.
Conveniently, the Mevo Core’s battery is removable, and lasts 6 hours, although USB-C power can be used for longer streaming sessions. Multiple ¼-20 mounting points are available on all sides for flexibility with attaching accessories and creating custom shooting rigs.
The Mevo Core (body only) is priced at $999 for the body only configuration (pitting it directly against the Blackmagic Micro Studio Camera 4K G2) and is available on Amazon, as is the bundle with the LUMIX 45-175 mm zoom lens.
