In a surprise to absolutely nobody, Fujifilm has announced the X100VI. While it looks strikingly familiar from the outside, the internals have received substantial upgrades that make the camera far more capable in video and low-light situations. Early reviews praise the X100VI for its subtle improvements and great handling.

After plentiful leaks and rumours, Fujifilm has announced what must be the most hyped camera of 2024. While the X100VI doesn't feature an improved lens, as we speculated just last week, it does bring an updated 40 MP sensor with in-body image stabilisation alongside a new processor, and all the image quality and flexibility benefits granted by those updates.

Fujifilm X100VI specifications highlights:

  • 40 MP X-Trans 5 CMOS HR APS-C sensor
  • X-Processor 5
  • 14-bit RAW stills capture
  • 6-stop, 5-axis IBIS
  • Video: 6.2K at 29.97 FPS, 4K at up to 59.94 FPS, 1080p at up to 240 FPS
  • ISO 125–12,800
  • Built-in 4-stop ND filter

The Fujifilm X100VI is pitched as a sort of do-it-all travel and everyday camera, thanks to its compact form factor, and Fujifilm hasn't disappointed in this regard. Despite the internal upgrades, the X100VI is just 0.5 mm thicker than the X100V at its minimum depth, while all other dimensions remain the same.

The Fujifilm X100VI also comes with 20 of Fujifilm's legendary film simulations baked-in from the factory. This time around, though, that factory will be located in China, presumably to avoid the supply catastrophe that happened with the X100V. Autofocus also received a significant update on the X100VI, with AI-powered subject detection and subject tracking stepping things up to near-X-T5 levels.

According to early reviews from the likes of PetaPixel and Kevin Mullins, the X100VI's IBIS is particularly handy, while the lens and sensor combination are particularly well-suited for each other, lending the camera a twinge more sharpness than its predecessor. The strange ports situation on the X100VI is sure to cause some headaches, though, with a 3.5 mm-to-2.5 mm adaptor necessary for recording audio with an external microphone. There is also a USB Type-C port for charging and data transfer, though.

Together with the regular X100VI, Fujifilm is launching the X100VI Limited Edition to celebrate the brand's 90th anniversary. The X100VI will be available in limited quantities with the unique serial number debossed on the hotshoe mount. Limited Edition purchasers will also get a special soft-release box, a special strap, and Fujifilm history cards to commemorate the special year.

Counter to previous rumours, however, Fujifilm says the X100VI will be available to consumers in early March at a recommended retail price of $1,599.99, while the X100VI Limited Edition will only be available in late March at an MSRP of $1,999.99.

If you're looking for a more flexible camera option with similarly-capable hardware, you might want to check out the Fujifilm X-S20, available for $1,399 with its 15–45 mm lens kit, or the Fujifilm X-T5 for $1,699 on Amazon.
